Hamburger SV vs Mainz 05

Hamburger SV were taken apart at home on Sunday, 6 September 2026, as Mainz 05 ran out 5-0 winners at the Volksparkstadion. The visitors were already well on top by the break, leading 2-0 at half-time, and they never let the home side settle. Whatever Hamburg tried in the second half simply didn't work, and Mainz kept adding to the scoreline until the gap between the two sides looked embarrassing on paper. For Hamburg this is about as bad as a home Bundesliga defeat gets, a five-goal beating in front of their own fans that will raise real questions about where things go from here. Mainz, on the other hand, could hardly have asked for a more emphatic afternoon. A 5-0 away win like this doesn't just take three points, it sends a message, and they'll head into their next fixture full of confidence while Hamburg are left to pick through the wreckage of a genuinely rough day.

Hamburger SV 0-5 Mainz 05 was the final score at Volksparkstadion, in a game where Mainz 05 did enough across the ninety minutes to deserve the three points. Even without the extra share of possession, which finished 54% in favour of Hamburger SV, Mainz 05 made the most of the chances that mattered and did enough to see the game out. The shot count told a similar story, with 8 attempts from Hamburger SV against 17 from Mainz 05 over the course of the game. It was not always comfortable for Mainz 05, and Hamburger SV pushed for a way back into the game, but the result stood. Games like this can carry real weight later in the season, so this is a scoreline worth remembering. Below is a closer look at how the match broke down, statistically.
