Málaga Club de Fútbol was founded in 1948, establishing itself as a fixture in the city's sporting landscape. Playing out of Estadio La Rosaleda, the club has been rooted in the same venue for decades, giving it a sense of continuity through the various ups and downs that any Spanish football club experiences.

The club's trophy cabinet reflects a journey through Spain's lower divisions. They won the Tercera División on three occasions—in 1963-64, 1992-93, and 1994-95—before climbing higher. A Segunda División B title followed in 1997-98, which paved the way for their biggest achievement: winning the Segunda División in 1998-99. That season marked the high point of the club's competitive history, representing the closest they've come to establishing themselves as a force in Spain's top flight.

Since then, Málaga has remained a presence in Spanish football, though that late-90s peak has proven difficult to replicate. Like many provincial clubs, they've experienced the familiar pattern of promotion pushes and relegation battles, all while maintaining their base at La Rosaleda. The 1998-99 campaign still stands as the pinnacle of what the club has achieved.

Juan Francisco Funes took charge of Málaga's first team in November 2025 after spending five years building the club's reserve side, Atlético Malagueño. His promotion from within came after guiding that team to promotion to Segunda Federación. The Spanish coach now faces the challenge of applying that experience at senior level.
