About Athletic Club Bilbao

Athletic Club was founded in 1898 and has made San Mames their home ever since, building one of Spanish football's great institutions in the Basque Country. The club's identity has always been rooted in the region, reflected in everything from their colours to the fierce loyalty of their support.

On the pitch, Athletic's golden era came in the early decades. They won back-to-back La Liga titles in 1929-30 and 1930-31, then claimed further championships in 1933-34 and 1935-36. After the disruption of the Spanish Civil War, they returned to winning ways with titles in 1942-43, 1955-56, 1982-83 and 1983-84, the last of which came during a memorable double-winning season. That late spell in the 1980s feels like a distant memory now – it's been over forty years since they last won La Liga.

The Copa del Rey has been kinder to them, though. Athletic have lifted it 24 times, from their first success in 1903 through to their most recent triumph in 2023-24. They've also won the Supercopa de España three times. These cup runs have kept the trophy cabinet busy enough, but for many supporters, that La Liga drought remains the thing that stings.

Head Coach

Ernesto Valverde

Edin Terzić took over as Athletic Bilbao's head coach in May 2026, arriving with recent experience managing Borussia Dortmund. The German-Croatian tactician will be tasked with maintaining the club's standards as they kick off the new campaign under his leadership.
