Nottingham Forest are one of the old names of English football, dating back to 1865, which makes them older than most of the clubs they've shared a pitch with over the years. They've played at the City Ground for so long now that the two feel inseparable, sat by the Trent with Notts County's old home visible just across the water. There's a quiet pride in Nottingham about that longevity, even through the years when the club has drifted from the top table.

What Forest did in the late 1970s still doesn't quite make sense on paper. A club with one league title to its name, won in 1977-78, somehow followed it up by winning the European Cup the very next year, then went and won it again in 1980. Throw in the League Cup four times over — 1978, 1979, 1989 and 1990 — plus a UEFA Super Cup in 1979 and a shared Charity Shield that same year, and you've got a period of dominance that punches way above what the club's overall history might suggest.

The FA Cup has come to the City Ground twice, first back in 1898 and then again in 1959, bookending decades of change for the club. It's that mix of an old-fashioned name with a genuinely astonishing modern peak that gives Forest their identity — a club that did something in Europe that very few English sides, before or since, have managed to repeat.

Oliver Glasner arrived at Nottingham Forest in July 2026 after a hugely successful spell at Crystal Palace, where he won the FA Cup, Community Shield, and UEFA Conference League. The Austrian manager replaced Vitor Pereira and takes over a club with genuine ambitions.
