Sunderland AFC was founded in 1879 and has called the Stadium of Light home for matches in recent decades. The club sits in the northeast of England with a rich footballing heritage stretching back well over a century.

The club's greatest period came in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when they established themselves as one of England's dominant forces. They won the English top-flight title six times between 1892 and 1936, with consecutive championships in 1892 and 1893 showing their early dominance. Success in the league continued sporadically through the following decades, with their last league title arriving in 1936—the same year they claimed the FA Charity Shield. That 1936 season proved to be a landmark, as it preceded their FA Cup triumph the following year. They added a second FA Cup to their collection in 1973, though it would be their last piece of silverware to date. The gap between those two cup wins highlights how the club's fortunes shifted in the decades after their pre-war peak, a familiar story for many of England's traditional big hitters.

Head Coach

R. Le Bris

Regis Le Bris took over as Sunderland head coach on 1 July 2024, arriving from French club FC Lorient, where he spent the previous two seasons. The French manager will be looking to make an immediate impact as the Black Cats look to challenge for promotion.
