About Deportivo Alaves

Deportivo Alavés have been a fixture in Spanish football since 1921, competing out of Vitoria in the Basque Country. For over a century they've called Mendizorroza home, building a loyal local following through decades of ups and downs in the Spanish league system. They're very much a regional club with deep roots in their community, the kind of side that matters enormously to their supporters regardless of which division they're in.

The club's greatest achievements have come in the lower divisions. Alavés won the Segunda División on four occasions—in 1929-30, 1953-54, 1997-98, and most recently 2015-16—showing they've had periods of genuine strength across different eras. They've also reached two major finals without winning them: the Copa del Rey final in 2016-17, and the UEFA Cup final in 2000-01, when they came close to landing European silverware. La Liga has remained elusive throughout their history, which is perhaps the measure of just how difficult it is for a club of their size to sustain a challenge at Spain's top level. Still, reaching a European final showed they could compete with the best when things came together, even if that prize ultimately slipped away.

Quique Sánchez Flores

Quique Sánchez Flores took over at Deportivo Alavés in March 2026, replacing Eduardo Coudet in the dugout. The Spanish manager brings plenty of experience from across Europe, having managed clubs including Watford, Benfica, Atlético Madrid, and Sevilla, where he spent the 2023-24 season.
