Union Berlin were made to pay for a slow start as Schalke 04 left An der Alten Forsterei with all three points on Friday, 11 September 2026, winning 1-3. The visitors took the lead before the break and went in 0-1 up at half-time, a scoreline that flattered the hosts given how little they threatened in that opening period. Union came out with more purpose after the interval, but Schalke always looked capable of finding another gear whenever the game opened up. In the end it was the away side's clinical edge that settled things, adding two more goals to put the result beyond doubt before Union grabbed a late consolation. For Schalke, it's the kind of away day that will do plenty for belief heading into the coming weeks. Union, on the other hand, will need to find answers quickly - a 1-3 home defeat is a tough one to take in front of their own fans, and questions will follow about how they allowed the game to slip away so comfortably.
The Matchup
Union Berlin 1-3 Schalke 04 was the final score at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, in a game where Schalke 04 did enough across the ninety minutes to deserve the three points. Even without the extra share of possession, which finished 66% in favour of Union Berlin, Schalke 04 made the most of the chances that mattered and did enough to see the game out. The shot count told a similar story, with 21 attempts from Union Berlin against 19 from Schalke 04 over the course of the game. It was not always comfortable for Schalke 04, and Union Berlin pushed for a way back into the game, but the result stood. Games like this can carry real weight later in the season, so this is a scoreline worth remembering. Below is a closer look at how the match broke down, statistically.
