Benfica got the job done at the Estádio da Luz on Sunday, 13 September 2026, seeing off a stubborn Gil Vicente side 3-1 in a game that took a while to get going their way. The visitors matched the home side blow for blow in the first half, and it was 1-1 at the break after Gil Vicente cancelled out an early Benfica goal. There wasn't much to separate the two sides before the interval, and anyone popping out for a half-time coffee could have been forgiven for expecting a tense finish. The second half told a different story. Benfica came out with more purpose and found the extra gear their visitors couldn't live with, scoring twice more to turn a scrappy contest into a comfortable 3-1 win. Gil Vicente had their moments early on but faded as the game wore on. For Benfica, it's another three points banked at home and a result that should settle any nerves after a tight first forty-five.
The Matchup

Benfica also had the better share of the ball, holding 64% possession, which usually goes hand in hand with the extra control a winning side tends to show. The shot count told a similar story, with 17 attempts from Benfica against 4 from Gil Vicente over the course of the game. Gil Vicente had their moments and did not make it easy from start to finish, but ultimately came up short on the day. Small margins like this one tend to add up over a season, and results such as this are often what separates teams in the table further down the line. Here is a closer look at exactly how the two sides compared, statistically.
