Seattle dominated possession and created chances throughout, but Sporting Kansas City refused to be overwhelmed at Children's Mercy Park. The visitors had the better of the play with 65% possession and 26 shots to their hosts' 10, yet somehow the match finished 1-1. Stefan Cleveland was the difference-maker between the sticks for Sporting, earning the official Man of the Match award with a display that kept his side in the contest when they were under the cosh. The draw leaves both teams with something to take away, though Seattle will rue not converting their superiority into three points. Sporting showed grit and resilience to snatch an equalizer and hold firm, while the Sounders had nine corners to work with but couldn't find the breakthrough. It was a performance that suggested Sporting's defensive discipline and Cleveland's shot-stopping prowess made the difference on a night when the statistics didn't tell the whole story.
The Matchup
It finished 1-1 between Sporting Kansas City and Seattle Sounders at Children's Mercy Park, a scoreline that summed up a game short on clear separation between the two sides. Neither team could really take control of the ball for long, with Sporting Kansas City holding 35% possession, close enough to an even split to explain why the game never settled into one side's favour. There were spells of pressure from both teams, but not enough to turn a share of the points into all three. Days like this are part of a long season, and how each side responds in their next fixture will say plenty about their form heading forward. Here is a closer look at how the two teams compared statistically.
